The results of the 21st Annual Lowell Thomas Travel Journalism Competition were announced this week in Las Vegas at SATW's annual competition. Cruise Critic's submission was one of 1,385 entries in 27 different categories – only two of which featured Internet-oriented travel journalism. The Lowell Thomas Award is, in essence, travel journalism's equivalent to the Academy Awards' Oscar.

The competition was judged by faculty members of the Missouri School of Journalism. Cruise Critic, which won a bronze in the Internet Publications/Web site category, was cited for its "array of resources to help travelers chart a course to the right cruise package. Site content includes both professional and user-submitted reviews and information tailored to specific 'cruise styles,' including seniors, families, gays and lesbians, and disabled travelers."

Other winners in the competition include the Los Angeles Times, National Geographic Adventure Magazine, The Boston Globe, The Washington Post and Travel + Leisure.

The Lowell Thomas Travel Journalism Competition is named in honor of the late Lowell Thomas, an acclaimed broadcast journalist, author and world explorer. It is sponsored by the Society of American Travel Writers Foundation.
