ABS Energy Research Releases Energy Transmission and Distribution Report for the World Market

London (PRWEB via PRWebDirect) March 14, 2006 -– Transmission and distribution (T&D) systems are a crucial part of the worldwide electrical system. ABS Energy Research presents the latest T&D Report, the definitive study on both global T&D systems and on markets for T&D equipment. Power to the people, indeed.
PRWeb Press Release Newswire v9

The latest edition of the T&D report contains a detailed outline of the major companies in the global T&D market with market shares, voltage analysis by country and analysis of overhead and underground lines including data for Europe. It is essential for energy traders, business people, utilities professionals, economists, academics and journalists.

ABS Energy Research estimates that the total value of the worldwide T&D equipment market is $79 billion in 2005. However, there is a stark contrast between the fall in value of the mature and industrialised countries with that of the growth of the developing nations and Eastern Europe. Asia and Europe are global leaders by region at 38 percent and 24 percent respectively. Regional analysis can hide national weakness, however. Japan joins the United States as two traditionally strong markets showing signs of decline. Japan's troubles are a reflection of economic stagnation.

The United States is struggling with a growing imbalance between robust power plant construction and serious lack of investment in the transmission and distribution system. Market forces have diverted money from transmission and into production. Transmission companies have merged to survive and three major players are still standing: ABB, Siemens and Areva.

Right now, the US has no national T&D network. Three outdated regional networks are left to cope with increases in the amount and complexity of electricity demand in a nation that accounts for fully one-quarter of the world's electricity supply. The T&D system is in dire need of updating, modernising and extension. Blackouts occur with unacceptable frequency and, in 2003, a major power outage cut off 53 million people in the Northeast US and Central Canada.

By contrast, counties in Europe and Asia have collaborated, building modernized and linked T&D grids. Russia has benefited following the link up and synchronisation of its UPS grid with that of Western Europe (UCTE), Central Europe (CENTREL) and Scandinavia (Nordel). Linking continues, incorporating the Baltic Ring (Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Poland) and other remote parts of Scandinavia and Northwest Russia. In the South, Sudel is working towards interconnection of the Balkan countries with Western Europe and Turkey.

In China, T&D development has lagged, only now receiving attention and investment. Programmes are underway to create what they hope will be the most advanced national grid in the world. The vast pace of economic growth and power demand has created the need to move large amounts of high voltage power around the country. China is well on the way to creating a completely modern, unified power system linking all parts of this vast country.
