Bourne, MA (PRWEB via PRWebDirect) June 19, 2008 -- Community was the theme and spirits were high at Wednesday’s lighting ceremony at Doran Park. Sitting on bleachers, Bourne Braves players, host families, representatives from the Braves and Cape Cod League organizations, the Upper Cape Tech Regional High School, fans of all ages, and Doran family members were treated to a sneak preview of a spectacularly lighted Doran field, while listening to some inspiring words from speakers, including special surprise guest, former Braves’ and Red Sox ball player, Lou Merloni.

Lou, who talked fondly about his time with the Braves, told this year’s players that in his years with the major leagues, he always shared Cape League experiences with other ballplayers. “The host families were the big reason … they shared in my move to the majors.” He also spoke of some of his experiences playing with the Cape League and wistfully remarked, “I wish we had lights when I was here.”
Also remarking on the strong sense of community in Bourne, Judy Walden Scarafile, president of the Cape Cod League, said that the partnership between the Bourne Braves, the Upper Cape Tech School, and the Doran family was unmatched. Both Kevin Farr, superintendent of Upper Cape Tech, and Tom Fink, president of the Bourne Braves noted the strong sense of community and the cooperation among so many groups that made the lights a reality. Both recognized John Doran and the Doran family’s generous contribution.
Don Provost, for whom bringing lights to Doran Park was a long-time dream and the project of a life-time, switched on the lights. He declared that, “Doran Park is not only the newest field, but also has the brightest lights on the Cape.” Approximately one year ago, the Doran family made a generous contribution toward the purchase and installation of lights for the ball field. On July 8, 2007 Doran Park was dedicated and named in honor of George Doran, Sr., a long-time Sagamore Beach resident and avid baseball fan.
Called upon to speak during the lighting ceremony, John Doran remarked, “There will be much more drama later in the summer, when the lights are on during night games.” That drama begins Saturday, June 14th at 7 p.m. when the Braves kick off their season against the Harwich Mariners at Doran Park.
