International Children's Digital Library Announces Creation of Special Collection

Boston, MA (PRWEB via PRWebDirect) August 12, 2008 -- The International Children's Digital Library (ICDL) (www.childrenslibrary.org), which is the world's largest collection of children's literature available freely on the Internet, today announced its Special Collection from the Children's Literature Research Center (CLRC) at the University of Minnesota. Within the Special Collection there are thirty books by L. Frank Baum, including all fourteen of his Wizard of Oz series, for which he is well-known. One advantage that this International Children's Digital Library Special Collection has over other digital libraries is that a complete set of illustrations is included along with the texts from the Oz books. Other Baum works included in the Special Collection are Songs of Father Goose, illustrated by W.W. Denslow, and The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus.

Director of The International Children's Digital Library, Dr. Ann Carlson Weeks says of the collection, "This Special Collection's inclusion of Baum's work serves as an excellent contribution to the International Children's Digital Library's reserves. L. Frank Baum was one of the most popular and prolific children's authors in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and his books were particularly popular during this period as grammar school graduation gifts for young girls."

The curator of the Children's Literature Research Center (CLRC) Collections, Professor Karen Nelson Hoyle, can be reached by email: k-hoyl(at)umn.edu.
